The Haunted Palace
November is National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month and
Also National Family Caregiver Month.
This poem is a dedication to all the lost souls…
The people and families of those who suffer the effects of dementia
And dementia related disease.
The toll is great and the burden heavy to bear…
Far beyond where tales are told
The ancient ones have hewn from stone
A palace forged from moon’s embrace
Upon this fair enchanted place.
Beside a golden sea it shores
Of silvered light it is adorned
This opal-essenced mystic realm
A once entrancing citadel.
Beyond the forests steeped in lore
Across the fields of soundless moor
Stays hidden from the world as seen
This place once born from waking dreams.
Remembered things once dwelled therein
Of long ago, forgotten when
This palace crumbed to debris
And limpid thoughts flowed to the sea.
An empty place that yet still stands
In once a fair and striving land
This haunted palace of the past
All memories lost, as time does pass.

This is a very touching tribute…I don’t think it could be said better…
Thank you…
Very well written, thank you also for taking the time for stopping by mine
Thank you…
Awe, so well said…. I care for my 97 yr. old step-dad who has Alz. &/or Dementia… depends on who you’re talking to, but it’s sad when he realizes he went back in time without meaning to, because he doesn’t do it all the time. He is slowly reverting to that of like a 5 year old… temper wise that is. I know it’s the disease, but it has to be tough on him cuz it’s tough on my mom and on me… (he still lives at home with my mom). Thanks for posting… this is lovely!
It is sad beyond words…How terrible it must be to know that one is losing their memories..for that person and for family members as well..My heartfelt thoughts go out to you and your family…
I like the metaphor, reminds me of Poe’s ‘Fall of the House of Usher’, another work that uses a building to illustrate decay of the mind.
Poe is one of my favorite authors…my thanks…
